Too Much Product: Are You Overdoing It?

by Beauty Editor

Ladies, we are all guilty of it. From too much blush to too much under-eye concealer, to way too much foundation. We are here to tell you - put down that brush, stop squeezing that last little drop of shampoo and read this.  The experts weighed in, literally:

Taylor Byers, Makeup Artist, Tackles Foundation and Concealer

"When applying foundation, remember that if you don't need to cover the entire face - don't! The size of a flat raspberry is a good amount of foundation to start with. The key to foundation is using a proper foundation brush (MAC # 190). The proper brush allows for more control of where the product will be placed, and will little waste product. Many people use sponge applicators but this only soaks up the product and does not allow for precise application. First, apply a thin layer on the areas you need coverage for. If you need more coverage on these areas just add a second layer. Always start with less product first, and build it up gradually. Another key tip, just like most makeup applications you must remember to Blend Blend Blend!"

"Similarly, when applying concealer a little can go a long way. Start off, by using an amount similar to the size of a pea. Using a concealer brush (MAC #195), apply to the area you need extra coverage (under the eyes or scars) the key to good coverage is to build. Start with a sheer layer and build it up progressively."

Jennifer Brodeur, Bella Clinique, Saves Us On Skin Care

"Anti-oxidants, anti-aging, collagen, elastin, vitamin C, toners, exfoliants, creams, serums?aahhh. It's enough to make your head spin. Not to mention how much is enough and how much is just too much. Are most of us wasting good products down the drain?"

"Here is a quick quantity guide. Some brands may have other recommendations so read the instructions prior to using just in case: Eye cream for both eye contours: size of a pea; Cleansers: size of a twoonie; Day cream: nickle; Night Cream: nickle; Serums: we usually recommend 1-3 pumps; Masque: quarter."

Nhi Tran, Sassoon Salon Toronto's Creative Director, Has the Hair Covered

"I suggest considering the density, the length and the texture of your hair. For example, fine and less dense hair requires less product than hair that is coarse, long and/or thick."

How much skin care do I apply

"With shampoo, a reasonable amount should be sufficient enough for cleansing. Keep in mind, not all shampoos are made equally, some lather more than others. If they do not lather substantially, the product is purposely made that way, so do avoid applying too much."

"On average with shampoo and conditioner, an olive size would be ideal for fine to medium texture hair falling above the shoulder. For hair below the shoulder, consider a walnut size. The amount of product applied to hair is easily misunderstood due to different product types and purpose. Using the right amount of product is vital in helping cut, colour, hair type and style look their best. Using too much product can make the hair stiff or greasy, and when you don't use enough the hair remains unclean or lacks moisture."

Patricia Bensimon, National Training Director at CLARINS FRAGRANCE GROUP, Airy Fragrance

'Walk into a beautiful cloud of fragrance. Spray your fragrance into the air, and walk into it. Less is more.'

So ladies, vow this year to pour on less foundation, less anti-wrinkle cream, less conditioner and what will make all of us happy wear a hint of fragrance.
