Rethink Your 2012 Goals to Avoid Failure
by Editor
My running group and I came back to our starting locale, a local boutique gym, on Saturday to find it packed like a can of sardines. We couldn't figure it out until someone said "ooh it's the January crowd, they will be gone by February." I thought to myself how sad that 80% of these people will loose their motivation in the coming weeks if they have not already. So if you have made a resolution and you are waning this is why and how not to go the way of the January crowd.

Whether your goal is to run a marathon or loose ten pounds the steps to achieve or fail a goal are somewhat the same:
1. Do Not Deny Yourself 'Hunger and denial are the enemies of successful diets. Be conscious and careful in your choices but don't avoid everything you love, it will only backlash. Choose single serving sizes or measure your object of desire (for me, it's popchips) into a bowl and stop when it is empty.' 2. Take Small Steps Make changes that you can achieve. Most of us can't go from running 5k to a marathon in a year. Choose the next goal up from a 5k - an 8k or a 10k. Once you are running 10k then move up from there. Making unrealistic goals will only lead to failure. Is your goal unrealistic or unattainable, have you set yourself up for failure?
3. Don't Follow the Trends Do you know anyone that chose "I want to try a new hairstyle this year" or "I'd like to incorporate more colour into my wardrobe or house". Setting a goal doesn't have to be earth shattering and personality changing it's about change - your change.

4. Is Your Goal Too General? If you chose get fit as your goal then say hello to failure. Rework your goal with markers or a concrete end goal. Rephrase your goal with that in mind. I want to go to the gym once a week. "Getting Fit", "Becoming a Better Person" those are generalities and will get you know where as do you really know what a better person is unless you have parameters attached to it? No! So go ahead and look at your goal and see if it's time to put some concrete parameters or end results into it.
5. Rethink Your Goal It's always acceptable to rethink your end goal. It's the end of the first week of the new year and if you find yourself waning then rethink your goal and make it more achievable. If you haven't lost a pound don't hate yourself just understand that is not achievable for you. Readjust your goal but ensure that you don't let yourself off too easy.
So go ahead and cut your hair short, try that orange lip colour, train for a marathon, learn to meditate or simply add more fish to your diet. Remember you don't have to wait till a New Year occurs to make changes in your life.
