Why Use a Personal Trainer When Pregnant and Exercising

by Samantha Montpetit-Hyunh

Because! I can't tell you how many times I meet new clients who say "why didn't anyone tell me?" And I say, "because to be quite honest, they don't know!"

Whether it's about what they can or cannot do during pregnancy or postpartum, there is A LOT of information out there about what is "considered" safe and what actually is safe. Mind you, most doctors are still waaay to conservative when it comes to exercise during pregnancy but then once the baby is out, they are giving women the green light to do things that they should stay far away from. Not surprising, however. How much does your doctor really know about and exercise and nutrition? do i need a personal trainerReally.

So this is why there are experts in particular fields that have studied and specialized in what they teach. If you want info about food, go to a nutritionist. Exercise, go to a personal trainer. Exercise during pregnancy and postpartum? Do yourself a favour and find yourself someone who specializes in that population. Although I am the first one to say pregnancy is NOT an illness, there are precautions and modifications that are necessary, depending on the individual. How would you feel knowing after you had given birth that some of the exercises you did during pregnancy did more harm than good?

Although I love personal trainers (obviously, I am one), some of them train anyone and everyone without consideration for what they are getting into. And unfortunately, this can cause problems down the road.
Put it this way, I met a woman today who has a Diastasis and told me she researched the condition online. She then gave the information to her trainer because she was doing all of the wrong abdominal exercises and likely made the condition worse. Luckily for her, she did the right thing and is now on the right track.
