Innovations: Beauty of the Future

by Jennifer Brodeur

It may sound cliché but the quality of our skin does influence our well being and how we interact with others. When our skin isn't looking its best we often feel more self conscious. Unfortunately, a demanding lifestyle can take its toll on our skin. Healthy eating habits, drinking water and getting enough exercise are the basic building blocks for healthy vibrant luminous skin. Sounds easy enough right?

Wrong, because today regardless of the basics it doesn't seem to be enough. There is now a growing demand for new 'non-surgical' procedures. Every day we hear about new exciting technologies created to help slow down the aging progress. Traditionally, medical anti-aging and wrinkle treatments have been fairly aggressive to correct. It seems we have come into a new 'Skincare Era' of softness and prevention.

Gone are the days of Nivea cold creams and your basic lipsticks. Lipsticks are now infused with plumping and hydrating ingredients, even Mary Kay now boasts that their cream targets the skin matrix. Pick up any magazine and you will see each page plastered with age-defying, revolutionary and nothing short of amazing products. However what does it all mean? Can we really believe all the hype? With all these advancements ? what can we expect within the next 5-10 years? Everyone has an opinion.

The at-home product ranges are exploding, you can even find hand-held laser devices. (Which I have to admit I strongly frown upon). The specialty and advanced facials now go beyond pampering. Basic extractions and massage are simply a thing of the past. Today's professional treatments are more effective than ever. That said, many are now starting to look at more non-invasive ways to treat their skin. Something to look forward to in the future more bespoke products, less 'nasties' in the products and more signature treatments because no one skin is identical.

Here are some new and not so new but trendy professional facials:

The OXYGEN FACIAL (best for blemished skin and dehydrated complexions) is a quick fix. It revives aged and tired looking skin. However its the serums that work deep within the skin via pressurized oxygen. Even though its ultra trendy right now treating the skin with oxygen dates back to the 1930's.

The ELECTRICAL FACIAL (best for tightening and toning) is more of a toning technique than a cleansing one, electrical-based facials help to somewhat tighten up slightly saggy skin. Immediate results, but difficult to tell how long they last.

The LED LIGHT FACIAL turn on the lights (best for an all over healthy glow, reduce breakouts, kill PP9 acne causing bacteria, reduce redness, reduces inflammation, stimulates collagen production). The popularity of LED light therapy is booming. LEDs were first introduced by NASA in the 1980's. LED light facials are a very natural approach to maintaining healthy skin. It is also an instant pick-me up especially for dry skin. Leaves the skin gleaming, soft and hydrated.

Max+ as seen in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 2 episode 8, Bravo.

The CHEMICALPEELS facial (best for acne-prone, discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles and dullness). Chemical peels improve skin texture using a chemical solution that causes dead skin to peel off. With a handful of different peeling agents to choose from beta hydroxy acid peels are becoming more and more popular. * I would not recommend at-home peels.

E.V.E FACIAL & at home serum as mentioned in the Volt café: The highly esteemed Institut Esthederm has introduced a new skin care concept with their latest product Essential Vital Elements or E.V.E. Serum Source. Apparently, Institut Esthederm spent more than 15 years researching it and they stress that it's not based on a high amount of anti-aging ingredients, instead it is substances that are naturally found in skin tissue. By doing this, cell function is optimized which makes the skin regenerate itself in a natural way, one that restores original quality and firmness.

MICRO NEEDLING: Everywhere you turn you can't help but hear about micro-needling. But is it too good to be true? Dr Setterfield located in British Columbia is researching the effects of dermal rolling of the epidermis (cosmetic needling) and dermis (medical needling) combined with pharmaceutical and homeopathic medications, plant extracts, vitamins, and other ingredients.

The majority of modalities used for skin rejuvenation incorporate the wound healing process. Conventional wisdom has leaned towards 'more is best'. The biggest challenge is finding the balance between the degrees of injury (acceptable downtime) and effectiveness (best outcome). Which fits perfectly into this 'soft era'.

Darker skin types limit aggressive treatments. Ablative treatments, e.g. laser resurfacing and deep peeling, while aesthetically effective, may cause undesired results. Medical needling does exactly the opposite, which is ideal. Preservation of the epidermis maintains environmental protection and minimizes downtime.

STEM CELLS FACIAL: with a stem cell facial, beauty goes hand-in-hand with controversy. The stem cell facial is said to be a restorative process that promotes rejuvenation of tissue, skin tightness etc?The process involves topically applying embryonic stem cells to the skin, usually in the form of a cream, and often utilizing gold as a vehicle to allow it to penetrate into the skin.

Claims are that the stem cell facial takes beauty maintenance to a whole new level; while surgery can get rid of an unsightly turkey neck and remove other pockets of drooping fat, stem cell facials can restore aged skin to a soft an succulent skin.

With all these new trends and treatments some will go and some will become mainstay. Let's see where science brings us next? Younger, more beautiful skin awaits.
