Long Lasting Lipstick: How to

by Taylor Byers

Lipstick, oh how we love it. What's not to love?  A little colour from your lipstick can brighten up your face and make you feel more feminine.  Needless to say, it works magic.  The only problem is this ? lipstick needs to be reapplied again and again if you want it to maintain its look.  This can be annoying and expensive.  No need to worry though because I'm going to share some tricks that will keep your lipstick lasting long.  Really long.

First, exfoliate your lips.
Make sure all of the dead skin is gone ? this will ensure that the lipstick is applied to a clean base. Here are two different methods to exfoliate your lips:

1) Soak a clean facecloth in warm water and gently rub it over your lips. A face exfoliator will work for this too. Always remember not to rub too hard!
2) Take a tooth brush that has soft bristles and gently rub your lips. This will remove almost all of the dead skin, revealing smooth plump lips ready for application.

Do you have cracks on your lips that aren't caused by dead skin or chapping?
If so, I would suggest using a lip primer.

Lip primers are great because they fill in cracks and lines. They enable the colour of the lipstick to last longer ? they also prevent the colour from bleeding onto other parts of your face. M.A.C Cosmetics has an effective Prep & Prime lip conditioner that you can get for $17.50 (1.7g). The trick to using lip primer is to not put the lipstick on right away. Apply the primer and then complete the rest of your face or wait 5 minutes. The primer needs time to set in and dissolve into the cracks and lines. When the primer appears to be tacky, your lips are ready for application. You don't need a lot when it comes to this stuff ? a little goes a long way!

Another technique that will help your lipstick last longer is to use a lip liner once you've applied the primer. Lip liner will create a distinct border that separates the shape of your lips from the rest of your face. It will also help to prevent a "bleeding effect" ? make sure the liner pencil is freshly sharpened for it to be most effective.

If you don't have a primer, try using your everyday concealer. After exfoliating your lips, blot the concealer over your lips to create a base before applying the lipstick.

One last trick that I guarantee will keep your lipstick lasting long is a simple one ? apply 2 layers.
As always, you exfoliate, outline with lip liner and then apply a thick layer of lipstick. After the first layer is applied, place a tissue over your lips and blot loose blotting powder onto your lips. The tissue ensures that only a certain amount of powder will get through to your lips in an evenly applied distribution. Remove the tissue and apply a final layer.

A final thing to keep in mind is hydration! Keep your lips (and body) hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day and eating fruits and veggies that have high water content in them.

Although more expensive and with limited colour selection, here are two products that are proven to keep your lips lasting longer if you don't want to use the techniques that I described above:

Dior Rouge Dior Replenishing Lipcolor ($26)
M.A.C Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolor ($20)
