Leave the notion behind that a bbq has to be about burgers and hot dogs. We believe that you can have a chic, gourmet bbq any day of the week. Read on for our healthy, chic, gourmet substitutes for the classic bbq.
 1. SNACKS Choose a healthier chip alternative like popchips, which are literally popped; not fried or baked. Arrange all the flavours in different stations around your backyard. Having separate stations throughout the yard will create conversation areas. popchips.com
2. APPETIZERS Go for the grilled veggies and cheese. For the veggies, try zucchini and red pepper. Grill on the bbq with olive oil. Cut pieces large, so they do not fall into the bbq and once done you can slice up to serve. Season with salt and pepper and a drizzle of Kalamata olive oil.
Cheese, is the easiest to serve. Try a different cheese each time you have a get-together. Simply head to your local cheese shop and tell them what you are serving and they will provide recommendations. Add a French baguette and you are set.
3. ALCOHOL Head for the Champagne or Prosecco (a more affordable option) with the appetizers and wine with dinner. A glass of champagne goes well with popchips, it brings out the flavour in the chip. lcbo.com
4. MEAT Reach for a different cut and type of meat. A pork tenderloin is not only lean but flavourful when marinated. Marinate in the morning with garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and rind, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook on medium heat for about 20 minutes (flip once).
5. SIDE If you haven't heard of quinoa, well, now you have. Quinoa is a seed, and referred to as a pseudograin. It is extremely easy to make, takes less time than rice and is healthier. Quinoa is very high in protein and fiber making it on to the list of the super foods. Cook Quinoa in a vegetable or chicken broth and add your favourite ingredients like asparagus, onions and mushrooms.
6. DESSERT Try the de rigueur dessert of the moment, French Macarons for a très chic dessert. bobbetteandbelle.com
These great substitutions are not only chic but they are healthy and require little effort - which we love!
