Foundation Makeup: Enhancing Your Skin Instead of Covering Up!

by Taylor Byers

Foundation should not be used to re-create your skin, but enhance it.  Finding the right shade of foundation is the most important step.  Dab a small stripe of each colour you think is right on your jaw line, to see if the colour matches your skin. Try testing this process out in daylight rather than under the false brightness of store lights.  The natural light will give you a better idea if the colour is right.

Primer
When it comes to layering your foundation, think of your face as a wall you might be painting in your home.  Before painting a wall you must first prime it so that the paint stays on longer, shows the true colour of the paint, and allows for smoother application.  This is the same when it comes to your face.  Before applying foundation try using a primer first.

Primers are used to help prepare your skin for the foundation application.  A primer can smooth out the texture of your skin and it helps the foundation apply easily.  It also helps eye shadows, blush and lipsticks stay on longer.

After applying your moisturizer - wait a few seconds for it to set in.  Then apply a small amount of primer that is water-based and contains a small amount of silica.  Silica helps fill in and smooth out lines and minimize pores.  Try Photofinish Foundation Primer by Smashbox ($36).

Layer
After the primer is dry, then it's time to start layering your foundation.  Start with a thin layer, using a foundation brush (using a foundation brush allows for more precise application and less product wastage).  If the first layer is not enough, then wait for it to set in and apply another layer, until you have enough coverage required.

Foundation Makeup tips how to find right colour
When applying your foundation do not forget your eyelids!  Eyelids tend to be a different colour then the rest of your face.  By making your eyelids the same colour as the rest of your face you will appear more wide awake and your overall look will flow more continuously.

Concealor
For under-eye and blemish spot concealing, the layering technique should also be used as described above, but instead with a concealer brush.  Depending on the darkness of the blemish or under-eye circles, you may want to opt for a thicker concealer.  A great under-eye concealer for dark circles is Bobbie Brown's Creamy Concealer ($32).

When applying the concealer start with a thin layer, then add more layers for desired coverage. Remember less is more, when too much concealer is used, the concealer can make fine lines appear deeper than they really are.

Now for pimples and blemishes use the same layering technique as mentioned above, but try using a colour corrector on the spot beforehand.  Lise Watier has an amazing corrector palette called Portfolio Professional Correction ($31).  Depending on the shade of your blemish you can apply the appropriate colour correction to lighten up the blemish, before the concealer is added for maximum coverage.
