With a brand new year comes an onslaught of new trends and there is no shortage of them in the wedding world. Every year, wedding industry experts are coming up with ideas more imaginative than the last for a tradition that dates back hundreds of years.

Trend #1: Tangerine Tango After Pantone declared Tangerine Tango colour of the season, the wedding industry has taken notice and incorporated this bright colour into everything from décor to dessert. Contrary to popular belief, this colour works well with many other shades including those in the pink and blue family. A little bit of colour goes a long way so if colour intimidates you, feel free to start slow by including tangerine as an accent in your bouquet or if you dare, consider tangerine chairs! quinceflowers.com

Trend #2: Flower-less Cakes Many brides today are foregoing the traditional floral trim atop their 3 tiered cakes and asking for other feminine details. Ribbon, ruffles, feathers and art deco details are ever more popular on cakes these days. thecakemuseum.ca

Trend #3: Atypical Escort Cards While a tent card looks beautiful and always gets the job done, many brides are doing away with them and opting for my creative ways of telling their guests where to sit. The escort card display is becoming the centerpiece of the cocktail hour with grand displays of names and table numbers in a plethora of creative ways. Brides are allowing this element to become very personal. If you love to travel, consider escort cards that double as baggage tags.
Trend #4: Paper Flowers Paper is no longer just for invitations. It has taken the form of flowers and these beauties are blooming all over the wedding world. Appropriately so, stationers are expanding their uses of paper and creating these flowers to be used as head table backdrops, escort cards or whatever else you can imagine. Unlike real flowers, these flowers come in any colour and if purchased through your stationer, can be made to match your wedding stationery.
Trend #5: Rustic Inspiration Glamour is not all it’s cracked up to be in 2012. Many brides prefer the shabby chic-rustic look for their big day. Any bride who loves this look is dedicated as the venue, gown, and decor all fit into the theme. A rustic venue may be outdoors or in a barn or even a wine cellar. A rustic dress is usually very flowy, often to the knee and does not feature any bling or tulle. The décor elements range from burlap to wood to small, yet beautiful flowers that appear home grown. Many photographers also embrace the theme and the photo’s colours appear muted and serene. littleminventions.com

Trend #6: Mix and Match Bridesmaids Gowns Choosing the bridesmaids gowns is often a difficult decision for a bride. Whether it is the style, cut or colour – not every member of the bridal party will be pleased. In hopes of alleviating the drama, many brides are choosing a colour palette and allowing their girls to wear varying shades and cuts to suit their skin tone and body. It’s unfortunate it took until 2012 for this trend to catch on as the dresses look gorgeous in pictures and everyone involved is generally happier. twobirdsbridesmaid.ca

Trend #7: Chalk Chalk is no longer just for the classroom and has multiple uses in the wedding world. Brides have come up with many creative ideas involving chalk and it can be made to suit any décor style. From table numbers to seating charts to direction signs and bar menus, the chalkboard has found its new home.
Brides – I challenge you to think outside the box and incorporate elements in your wedding that will both wow your guests and that are personal to you.
